Unrenovated cellar ceiling insulation Information, help, tips and advice on cavity walls, ceilings and lofts etc....

We have a cellar in our Victorian terraced home. The living / dining room are freezing in winter and we are thinking of insulating the ceiling in the cellar to prevent this. Can we use normal loft insulation which we then board over with hardboard. Is this ok and will ita cause damp / prevention of airflow? We do have an airbrick at one end of the cellar and are not going to block it in any way. Will this suffice?

If the cellar is vented then it will be the inverse of a roof. I would suggest using a polyurethane board with silver foil to be sides (kingspan or celotex) and this has better insulation properties so less thickness is required compared to quilt to achieve same result. Plus it is rigid so you cut it to size and fit it tight between the floor joists thus boarding is not required. (you can put nails in side of joists to support insulation if it is necessary.
