Painting Pine

How do I need to prepare previously varnished pine skirting boards and door frames in readiness to paint white?

sand them down with an 80 or 120 grit paper depending on the thickness of the varnish. best to get back to bare wood. then apply a decent quality primer followed by a solvent based undercoat. once dry then apply whatever finish you require.
