Taking off a Radiator All aspects of plumbing questions and answers, help, tips and information

I am going to re-tile my Bathroom walls so will need to take off the small radiator.

I have just read the Projects section "Removing a Radiator".

On the left hand side (wheelhead valve) I have a Thermostatic valve fitted so I can close this off.

On the right hand side (Lockshield valve) it is different to the description in the projects section.

When I pull the white cone shaped cap off it does not reveal a spindle but it looks like an Alan key is needed to turn this clockwise to close the valve.
Does that sound right?

Hi,

Yes, use an allen key to turn LS off.
The TRV will not be totally closed when you turn it 'off'
You need the 'decorator' cap to totally close the TRV

Not sure what decorator cap is unless its the thing that replaces the TRV and screws right the way down.

What can be used is a blanking plug which will temporarily replace the radiator outlet spindle.

I had to do this a couple of months ago, i just untightened the valves from the pipes and took off the rad with the valves still on. And put compression caps on, whilst using the same olive ad nut. This is more work but i dint want to break the seal between the valve and the rad bcos it was so old.
