Help with kitchen flooring

by Liz Clarke » Mon Apr 27, 2009 1:49 pm

Help help.
We have laminate flooring in our kitchen that has been laid prior to the units being fitted. The laminate is very worn now and we would like to replace this. Ideally we would like to replace with ceramic or stone tiles but have been told that the only way to do this is to have the units and worktop removed. This is a very expensive option so thought perhaps to replace the laminate with better quality laminate that is much more suited to kitchens. Will we have to remove the old flooring or can this be laid on top. The other question is how do we fit the laminate. Do we take up to the edge of the unit??

Thanks

"We have laminate flooring in our kitchen that has been laid prior to the units being fitted. The laminate is very worn now and we would like to replace this."

A first class example of why not to fit laminate under kitchen units.

"Ideally we would like to replace with ceramic or stone tiles but have been told that the only way to do this is to have the units and worktop removed."

Thats nonsense. Remove the laminate flooring that you can. Then using a Fein Multimaster (or similar tool) you can cut the old laminate back that you couldn't remove to underneathe the front of the units having removed the fascia board. Then either lay new laminate or ceramic tiles up to the unit feet, therefore under the front edge. Replace the ffascia boards over the top of the new laminate / ceramics and you'll never know the difference.

"This is a very expensive option so thought perhaps to replace the laminate with better quality laminate that is much more suited to kitchens."

Yes it is and whoiever suggested it is taking you for a ride. See above.

"Will we have to remove the old flooring or can this be laid on top."

Yes you should remove it and no you shouldn't lay on top..

"The other question is how do we fit the laminate. Do we take up to the edge of the unit??"

Explained, I hope, above. Take it under the unit so that the fascia board covers the edge when put back in place.

HTH

Cheers
