How much weight can I add to a load bearing wall?

by Peters » Mon Jun 29, 2009 12:02 pm

I have a house built in 1930 with 9" brick and plaster walls. I want to add several layers of extra plasterboard / sound insulation to the party wall.
How much extra weight is it safe to add to the wall?
The house is a semi detached ground floor plus upstairs three bedroomed.

Peters,
It is likely that you will have lime plaster walls so do try hanging the extra layers direct into the plaster. Fit battens on the wall with fixings through into the bricks and insulation between the battens and plasterboard fixed to the battens.
end
