Replacing 2 lintels in a loadbearing wall with an RSJ

by jimuthy » Sat Aug 15, 2009 3:35 am

Hi
My semi-detached house was extended to the rear in the distant past in order to increase the size of the kitchen. While much of the brickwork of the former external wall was removed, the house was left wth a brick column 800mm x 300mm slap bang in the middle of the room (e.g. the brickwork between a 900mm door opening and a 1750mm window opening). The brick column supports two lintels which are then built into the brickwork on either side of the former door and window openings.
I would like to get replace these lintels and column with a single RSJ spanning the full 1750mm (e.g. 900+800+1750)- what is the best way of going about this?

Thanks

You need to get an engineer to produce you the calculations for the size of the steel and any padstones required and then make a building regs application for the strucutral alteration.
