Painting MDF furniture

Hi, I made a small slide baord from MDF and have used Leyland gloss in black for finish, however paint keeps chiping away...any ideas why?

did you prime and undercoat it first?

how many coats of primer and undercoat? did you make sure that the surface of the mdf was free of dust and grease and any other contaminants before you painted?

Was it an mdf primer?
