Top floor flat, ceiling/roof void insulation

by HeatLoss » Mon Oct 04, 2010 1:27 pm

Hi there,

I live in a top, 2nd floor flat. The roof is flat and appears to be made of a compressed material type of board onto which the tar roof covering is applied.

Between my ceiling plasterboard and the roof there are joists that look about 8" deep.

I would like to insulate the ceiling/roof to reduce heat loss.

I have considered an extra later of insulated pasterboard on the ceiling and also filling the 8" deep gap between the joists with something like shredded rock wool or polystyrene beads.

Can anyone suggest a solution. It won't be possible to pull down the celing to install rolls of regular insulation. It would have to be something that is "pumped" in I think.

The ceiling has down lighters which could be converted to cooler LED types if this helped. Also, perhaps boxes could be installed around teh downlighter fittings.

I imagine there must be some solution out there as there are lots of flats like mine in our neighbourhood, from the late 60s/70s era.

Thanks for reading!

HeatLoss,
You need specialist advice.
Fully insulating the cavity may lead to condensation problems.
If the cavity is ventilated you should be able to add insulated plasterboard underneath.

stoneyboy - thanks for the reply

I'm asking on here as most "specialist companies" only seem interested in vanilla wall or loft insulation and don't appear to have the knowledge or inclination to help more challenging scenarios.

cheers
