Hello, this is my first post. We are looking to resurface our front garden/driveway. it is currently laid to lawn with a concrete drive and we plan to lay it to all gravel. I am planning to follow the advice on this site to use scalpings / Type1 and topped with (largish) shingle. However, I am worried by conflicting information about the drainage qualities of this surface... particularly as it tends to slope towards the house. There is an existing storm drain that we will bias towards but I was hoping that the surface will have natural drainage qualities.

One other thing do I read Type 1 and scalpings as the same thing?

Advice gratefully received - please keep terminology to a layman level!

Type 1 contains clay to bond it together so you might do better to use compacted crushed hardcore which will be free draining.

yes, Scalpings also commonly referred to as MOT Type 1 stone or MOT1 Stone.
