I have moved into a new home which has woodchip on all walls in all rooms (less bathroom and kitchen).

I have since learned that the woodchip is old and has many coats of paint on it, but worst of all, it was applied directly to plasterboard not plastered walls.

I am concerned that steaming or soaking (even scoring) the woodchip will damage the paper-covering which plasterboard comes with when purchased (not sure what it is called).

How can I remove the woodchip without damaging the plasterboard?

I do not wish to wallpaper when finished, just end up with smooth, painted walls.

There is now way possible of not damaging it, Just soak it with soapy water and hope for the best, Once stripped fill and defects and line the walls.
