1930 Bay Window Moving

by phillip359y » Fri Sep 13, 2013 7:43 pm

Hi Guys,

I have a 1930 house with a bay window on both floors the bay on the top 2nd story is moving and small cracks have appeared between the bay and the walls on each side. The top floor has a timber frame and i understand this is a common problem. The movement is very small and I am told not serious but I have been advised to strap the bay to prevent further movement.

Can someone advise what is meant by strapping the bay, how is this done . I assume we are talking ties on the inside but cant find any information on how this is done or where and how the ties should be fitted?

Appreciate some information

Thanks Phil

they hack off the plaster and attach galvanized steel straps to the timber frame and then to the house brickwork, then replaster

Thanks!, so I should be looking at a couple of straps on the inside each side of the base frame and then finishing....Any Idea if the straps are specialized or where I can get them?
