Joist Position for new Staircase into Loft Area From Landing

by Andybambi » Thu May 29, 2014 1:38 pm

Hello,

I want to install a straight staircase from my upstairs landing into my attic. I want to position the stairs against the wall but the joists in the attic run in same direction as the stairs. Therefore there is a joist running flat against the wall I want to fix the stairs to. Do you know how I can resolve this problem?

Many thanks

you need to cut out the brickwork and attach a joist at each end so that it rests on the brickwork, its called a trimmer, basically where you have cut the joists you will need to fix a new one and attach joist hangers to support the weight of the cut ones, if that makes sense
