Just bought a house which has a pretty bad damp issue. The interior walls are all dry lined and you can see the damp coming through around the base of the walls (up to a height of about 70-80cm).
The house is 130 yrs old and has high ground level all around the ground floor (ground floor level is actually beneath the level of the ground outside).
We've began lowering the ground level outside, we were told to aim for 150mm beneath interior level. However we're unable to reach this depth due to the soil pipe being about 100mm beneath interior ground level.
Once we have dug around the entire house exposing the footings of the building, what should be our next step in order to stop the rising damp?
The house has been recently rendered to a good standard, will the combination of rendered outside and dry lined inside mean that the moisture will get trapped in? We're hoping to cure the damp from the outside so we don't have to rip out the new plasterboard work.
I'd appreciate any advice on this matter.
