How to Fix Squeaking Floorboards in 3 Year Old New Build Property

by ms10 » Tue Mar 22, 2016 9:31 pm

Hi,

We have a 3 year old newbuild with squeaking floorboards. The builder attempted to rectify this issue a year or two ago, but if anything it's getting worse.

I've read around and understand that screws and talc are among the suggested remedies. I have, however, been wondering about an alternative method and was wondering if anyone had attempted it or has any thoughts.

It appears to me that the majority of the squeaking comes from wood-on-wood action (so to speak), from the floorboard moving over the joist/beam. So, why not put a plastic layer between joist and floorboard. Why not wrap the top of the joists with a polythene or pvc layer - stapled into place, then screw or nail the boards through it?
