Best Way of Building a Wall for a Sunken Garden

by luke123 » Thu Jul 13, 2017 9:19 am

I am planning on making a sunken area in our garden and cannot figure out the best way to build the wall. I have never built a wall before but am a confident DIYer.

I would ideally like to build it out of blocks then render it, mainly due to cost. That being said I am happy to spend more if required.

The area will be around 6000mm by 4000mm, and sunken to around 300mm, and the wall will come around 900mm above ground level (so 1200mm in total with 1/4 below ground level). It will be surrounded by lawn for several meters each side.

I have done a lot of research on drainage and how the water will affect the materials, but I am not sure if the info I have found is relevant as the retaining part of the wall is small.

Therefore I would like advice on whether my plan to use blocks then render the wall is sensible, and also if draining is required, and if so how I should add this.

If I have missed any vital info please let me know.

Thanks

Luke
