Enlarging Loft Hatch and What to do With Cross Beam

by Greegie » Mon Dec 11, 2017 3:48 pm

Hi everyone,
I have a question about enlarging a loft hatch. We have a very small loft hatch in our kitchen. I want to enlarge it and fit a new hatch door. But the joists and rafters have very narrow spacing. I know I can cut the joist and connect either end of the cut joist to the joists on either side with a cross beam. But what do I need to do to the rafter which has a supporting beam running from the rafter to the joist in a vertical direction? Can this be cut, if so, how to I maintain the integrity of the strength of the rafter?
Thanks in advance.
