I'm engaging builder to construct a base and floor for a large-ish (30m^2) workshop and I want to understand my options for construction and flooring.
The workshop will be a timber building. I will have some heavy machines so wanted a concrete floor, so combining the base and floor seem to make sense, especially as poured concrete is not much different in price than a suspended wooden floor (i.e. 1inch ply over 6x2's)
Main requirements:
must be a dry floor
Level and dust free - standard tamped concrete is too rough.
A comfortable surface for working on, but capable of supporting heavy machines.
I haven't got a fortune to spend (as usual..)
What are my construction options for the base and dpc? Our subsoil is sandy clay and drainage isn't too bad.
For the flooring, do I go for a smooth concrete surface or for some form of tiled flooring on top? What process are needed in each case to smooth the concrete?
many thanks for any advice,
Kevin.
