Fixing a Worktop to Brickwork for Outdoor Kitchen

by Kensi » Wed May 02, 2018 4:07 pm

Hi All,

Long time reader, first time poster.

Im currently building an outdoor kitchen. As part of this I have built a 2 meter cabinet out of brick (single walled) up to 900mm. I now want to put a wooden worktop ontop of it, but I Suddnly have a few questions and I was hoping someone could help.

My concerns are...

1 - What is the best way to screw the worktop down onto the brick. I would normally just put a plug in the brick and screw through the wood. But as its a worktop I don't want exposed screws on the surface. What would be the best way of screwing from underneath? I want it to be pretty strong as I don't want to risk the worktop warping and popping off over time.
2 - The surface I would be screwing down to is quite undulating (my brickwork is ok, but they are a rustic brick with soft edges). what would be the best way to ensure I am pulling down onto a level surface. Im concerned that If I pull it down with screws, the bricks would cut into the wood which would cause it to rot over time. I did think about putting a layer of mortar down first, but a friend told me that its bad practice for mortar to touch wood, and that the mortar wouldn't cure properly without being sandwiched by another brick.

Any advice would be highly appreciated.

Ken
