Damp and Damp Smell Beneath Vaulted Floor?

by officerlog » Wed May 30, 2018 3:16 pm

Hi all

We have a basement room (currently used as a ‘snug’) at the front of the house which is on the same level as our kitchen. The whole floor smells damp and recently we have started to avoid using the snug room. Now, although this room is, from the front of the house, sub-terrain, as the house was built on a slope, there is actually a room beneath the kitchen which is only accessible from the back garden and so currently used as a garden store.

When we had the snug room damp-proofed, they applied a damp proof coating to the walls. We recently had someone in to check the damp readings which seemed to be fine. Beneath the snug room, however, is about a metre of space and I believe the air flows to the garden store (beneath the kitchen) and out the back of the house.

My question is, if we have had the walls damp proofed, why does the whole floor still smell of damp? Is it possible that the damp is coming in from underneath the floor where this big gap is? Any ideas how we can solve this issue as the snug room is totally uninhabitable currently!?
