Particle Board vs. MDF When Buuilding a Wardrobe

by tmino » Thu Jul 05, 2018 4:57 pm

Hi all,

I'm building something similar to a wardrobe. But think of it as a large box with a single door. Dimensions are 2.2m high, 1m wide, 1m deep. There's nothing inside the box :-). I'm unsure about which material to use for this project as I'm worried about:
- The frame of the box warping due to the weight of the door (will be of same material and thickness) as the door will be attached to only one side of the frame
- The overall stability of the box (doesn't wobble too much)
- The overall weight (should be less than 200kg)

Any recommendations with regards to
25mm particle board vs. 18 or 25mm MDF vs. 18 or 25mm plywood?

I'm aware that
particle board is cheap, light but not very strong
MDF is a bit more expensive, heavy and a bit stronger
plywood is expensive, medium weight, but the strongest of all

Thanks!

20 or 25mm MR MDF is the way to go.

MDF is very consistent throughout, cut edges appear smooth and won’t have voids, splinters, allows easy cutting of detailed designs using a jigsaw, scroll saw or band saw. so it will be a better option here.
