We're planning to put up bookshelves on our living room wall but we're concerned about the weight. We have many books, lots of them heavy hardbacks, and these will take up most of the height and width of the wall - about 12 feet in width of a 16ft wall. The issue is that the wall is a single thickness brick party wall in a 160 year old building (former railway cottage) and I'm concerned about putting a lot of strain on it especially since any damage will also affect our neighbour. Our handyman assures us that no amount of bookshelves will pose a threat to it but I'd like some other views before we start.
