Installing a Ring Doorbell Pro Without Original Doorbell Present

by willsie01 » Wed Oct 23, 2019 8:29 pm

I'm fitting a Ring Doorbell Pro to our front door but we don't have an existing doorbell or room in the CU for the Ring transformer.
As far as the transformer goes I was thinking of mounting it in a 2 way DIN enclosure and positioning it in an out of the way spot near to where I position the doorbell. Can I tap off either the hall lighting or hall socket outlet ring to provide a supply to the transformer and what wire size will I need to use? Can I use 0.5mm twin core bell wire? Ring tell me I should use 20 gauge wire to connect the transformer to the Doorbell so would the 0.5mm bell wire do this as well?

What ever you take your supply from you should use the same size cable as is being used.
So if it's from the lights it should be 1.5mm twin and earth
If it's from the socket it should go to a fused connection unit, then to the transformer. It should be 2.5mm twin and earth

20 Gauge wire is bigger than 0.5mm bell wire. But what you choose to do is up to you.
