Evening, first time poster, renovating a 1983 Westbury timber framed house.

We’ve knocked through the kitchen into the diner and need to level the floors. Currently both are vinyl tiles (glued down, could contain asbestos) on top of concrete, with a sunken wooden beam where the stud wall was. Kitchen screed is about 10mm higher, and level with the beam.

What’s the best way about this? Take the beam out, fill with concrete then use self levelling on the lot (with a decent primer)?

Your proposed solution is ok provided the tiles are firmly stuck down.

Hi stoneyboy, thanks for the reply. The tiles have snapped round the edges so I'm going to take them up as much as poss this weekend (according to HSE guidance). Whatever I can't get up will be ok left down. Do you think I need to remove the bottom plate of the stud wall or can I leave it in there?

Better to remove it otherwise you’ll probably get a crack in the concrete above it. Use a self levelling compound with latex to help the floor stick.
