Replacing Bathroom Extractor Fan Wiring Question

by ColinTheTrainer » Mon May 03, 2021 10:37 pm

My old extractor fan (installed by the bathroom fitter eight years ago) has packed up so I've bought a replacement. Both original and replacement have humidity adjuster and timer, so both require three wire connection. With all the wiring in the background already done, I'd assumed wiring up the new fan would be straightforward. In the old terminal block pictured, the brown wire connects to red, black to black, and grey to yellow. The new fan (pictured) has a black neutral wire, yellow switched live, and orange permanent live.
If I look online at how to wire the new fan, I get a different configuration to if I try to replicate the colours in the old fan.
Any thoughts on what I should do?
Many thanks.

Why look on line when you already know what colour does what?

Brown is going to red, which must be live
Black is going to black which is probably neutral
Which only leaves one wire...........

Ideally you should test each core to see what it does, or you could get someone to do it for you, it is your choice.

The truth is it is up to who ever wired it, as to what colour they chose to do what, there are no 100% rules for lighting colours (Believe it or not)

Many thanks. I didn't realise the installer had a free rein with the wiring.
