Replacing sealant around bathtub

by Kieron457 » Fri Sep 24, 2021 6:22 pm

Hi,

I'm about to replace the sealant around the bathtub but have a quick question.

First, assume that I've removed the old sealant (only around the bathtub edge where it meets the wall tiles), then cleaned the gap thoroughly with methylated spirit, and now ready to apply the new sealant (Dow 785+).

My question is what happens at the corners where you also have a silicon bead running up the wall between the corner wall tiles (see attached photo with red arrow).

Am I meant to also apply a new silicon bead on top of the old one running up the corner?.. if not then isn't there a risk that water will seep where the new sealant applied around the bathtub meets the existing silicon bead running down the corner wall? (hope that makes sense)

OR... am I meant to remove not only the old sealant around the bathtub edge but also the silicon bead running up the corners. Then apply sealant around both the bathtub AND up the corners right up to the ceiling?... which sounds like a lot more work!

In my bathroom the silicon bead running up the corners is in very good condition, it's just the sealant around the bathtub that has patches of black mould on it plus has come loose in spots.

Your advice here would be much appreciated :-)

Thanks

Hi keiron457
Suggest you cut an arrowhead in the corner mastic about 50mm up and refill this at the same time as you form the bath edge seal.

@stoneyboy... Just to clarify do you mean cut an arrowhead (50mm up) pointing down as shown in the attached photo?

Thanks

Hi kieron457
I was thinking the other way found with the widest part of the cut at bath edge level so as to give a good bead join here.

"widest part of the cut at bath edge level so as to give a good bead join here"... that actually makes sense... will do that, have the arrowhead pointing up.

Cheers
