I'm in the UK and have the joy of dealing with her exes wiring. Upstairs i need to fit a bulb with rose but cant find how to connect it properly. The original wire is all pushed into a plastic block. Single black in one part. Double black in the next. Triple red in the third and all earth in the last. If i connect blue to the single black and brown to the triple red it won't switch on and if i connect blue to the double black and brown to the triple red it won't switch off. Aaaargh please help :(

try blue to double black and brown to single black that should be the switch wire and have red tag on it.

Right sounds like to me your crossing your wires mate!
The single black wire is a switch live.......
The double black is a neutrule..........
The triple red is a common live ..........
Turn the power off and connect the BLUE to the double black (N) . Then connect the brown to the single black (SWITCH LIVE) and of course earth to earth!
