ceramic on quarry ? Advice and information on tiling and fixing tiles to a variety of surfaces

I have an old quarry tiled floor in my kitchen. Is it possible to tile over it with ceramic tiles or is it recommended to rip them up and start on the concrete sub floor. Will the sub floor need any further treatment as well? Any comments really appreciated, thanks.
