New Light fitting General problems, solutions, information and advice on fixing to walls of all kinds

Hello,

I'm currently trying to change a light fitting in our new house. Unfortunately the new fitting is smaller which means the new holes for screws are too close to the large hole where the wires come through. This means that the plasterboard is weak and falling apart from where I'd like the new raw plugs. How can I solve this problem? To make matters worse it is downstairs toilet light and access to floorboards would be beneath the bath. Any ideas?

See our project on repairing holes in plasterboard, repair as much of the holes as possible with board either side of the cables, then fill and fix the fitting. The only other solution is to cut the hole even larger to enable you to fix a timber "nogin" between two joists running across the position of the proposed screw holes. Then fit new board onto battens fixed to the joists then replace the fitting.
