by tima » Sun Feb 17, 2008 2:23 pm

iWe think there may be a crack in the 1st flr ext wall as there is damp patches on interior wall ,right hand side of window? is it a good idea to seal the crack in exterior wall with silicone masonary sealer to prevent dampness coming through to the inetrior wall?Have used interior damp sealer but new paint still comes off. please advise as we've had so many diff answers from diff people. Thanks

IF THERE IS A CRACK IN WALL, YOU NEED TO FIND OUT : -

IF THE CRACK IS IN THE MORTAR JOINTS ONLY?
REMOVE OLD CRACKED MORTAR TO 12-15mm IN DEPTH AND REPOINT WITH MORTAR TO SEAL.

IF THE CRACK RUNS THROUGH THE BRICKS AND MORTAR JOINTS?
DO AS ABOVE AND ALSO FILL GAPS/CRACKS IN INDIVIDUAL BRICKS/MASONARY WITH EXTERNAL WEATHERPROOF MASIONARY FILLER TO SEAL.

IF WALL IS RENDERED?
REMOVE AREA OF RENDER AFFECTED WITH CRACK TO GET TO UNDERLYING MASONARY AND AFFECT REPAIRS AS ABOVE AND ALSO PATCH REPAIR WITH NEW RENDER TO SEAL.
