Removal of Door Ornament and Remaining Adhesive?

Hi,
I've recently moved into a new house and the previous owner has left an ornament affixed to the plastic frame of the front door with a gummy but very strong (hard in places) adhesive. Is there anything I can use to make it easier to get this thing off? If not then do any of you have any recommendations. A slight problem is that the item is a religious thing (a mezuzah) and it's fairly delicate (a sort of plexiglass). If it was anything else I would just smash it with a hammer but we have lots of Jewish neighbours and I think that might upset them.
Any suggestions?
Many thanks in advance,
Paul
