Filling large, deep gaps in new timber windows

I’d like to fill the gaps in these new timber double glazed windows..they were made to match some original ones on the house but I feel the gap makes them look modern.
As the gap is deep though, what would be the best way of doing this? Caulk would just disappear into the gap and it would be hard to know if it’s full. Would it be best to pad it out first with something else? We don’t want to use wood filler as this would probably crack over time with the door being slammed. Thanks in advance.
