Narrow staircase

Can anybody help me please. I've just moved into a cottage which has a very narrow staircase. I am looking for some sort of bracket to thread a thick rope through it to act as a handrail. Any suggestions as to where I could get them?

A solid wood handrail will give both you and others more confidence.
