What is This Fire Surround Material?

We have recently moved into a new property. We have decided to make use of the existing fireplace. It's in good condition but terrible paintwork on it.
Iv put paints stripper on and when iv removed the paint. It's revealed a white chalky material when we was expecting wood. What is this material??
