narrow spindles

I want to replace some decorative metalwork from my staircase with wooden spindles. The metalwork is secured within a 20mm wide, sturdy wooden frame built between the underside of the bannister and the stairs.
I would like to keep this wooden frame in position and fit the spindles within it. The problem is, I cannot find any spindles with ends as narrow as 20mm. Does anyone know of any narrow spindles? Should I buy standard spindles and taper their ends? Any other bright ideas???
