Unable to open back door....help please!

My back door has both a top and bottom integral bolt which is opened (normally!) with a straight grooved key. The bottom one is no longer able to be openend as the key is not catching and just turning. Any ideas anyone? I have removed the small brass plate on the door, yet still unable to open it with anything.

Many thanks

Carolyn

Try getting a small screwdiver down the gap between the door and frame and try to gently force it back.
another option is to drill a hole through the door between the keyhole for it and the edge of the door so you can manipulate it back. Another option is to use an angle grinder with a 1mm cutting disk between the door and frame to cut it.

The rack bolt has basically failed.

replacement keys that will fit these locks can be bought at any major diy store. it's worth a try before hacking about and causing expensive work and repairs. the keys are usually made of soft brass and can wear down and round off over time. they will not then function properly.

Arrh yes but if this was the case then how come it has opened the bottom bolt without problem ?

I know i could get this open without any drilling and no damage to the door but then thats why i charge for my services

And no its not really a diy method, just specialist tools for the job.
