Skirting boards

by ajax » Mon Jan 26, 2009 5:40 pm

may sound like a silly question, but i'm a little new to this DIY thing. I'm going to fit new skirting boards to my house, and my question is, do I leave a gap at the bottom of the skirting for carpets. Is it wise to do this, good practice, or not at all. The old ones that came off, seemed to have around 0.5 to 1cm gap all around, but even that wouldnt be able to fit the new carpets.
many thanks

you would not normally leave a gap under skirting for carpets. butt then straight to the floor then fit the carpet to it.

the gap beneath the original skirting could be there for many reasons. could be some kind of floating floor finish there originally and skirting was laid on top to hide the gap.
