joining joists without hangers

Hi all,

I hope someone with experience will kindly help me with a problem re joining timber joists at right angles - without using metal hangers! (its a listed building).

My joists are 75 x 175 victorian pine. I have built an 'L' staircase and now need to trim the floor to finish.

There is one trimmer at 1 m long and 2 others coming off at 2m long.

My instinct is to toe nail a couple of 10mm x 150mm coach screws but I am VERY nervous of the soundness of this fixing. Can anybody with experience please offer some advice/reassurance ?

Many thanks

bazm10,
You need to fix something like a 75x50 batten along the bottom of one joist and correspondingly notch the ones which are fitted at right angles.
