In the tips it advises not to put an inset sink near to a worktop join. Is it ok to overlap a joint with an inset sink? say by a couple of inches

not recommended unfortunately.

firstly you will drastically reduce the integral strength of the worktop. secondly it invites moisture ingress, resulting is swelling.

Chris is absolutely right - don't even attempt it.

Can I suggest:

1 - you either re-plan your worktop layout such that the inset is away from the ends of a longer run,

2 - see if a right hand or left hand drainer would make a difference to the positioning,

3 - (last resort) see if you can get a sink with a drainer that doesn't need to be part of the cut-out, and the drainer could then overlap the joint, but the cuts will have to be spot-on, the cuts sealed with at least 3 coats of varnish or whatever, and the worktop connectors properly fitted.

Good luck!

Jack.
