I have a door handle which is part of a mortice lock. The door handle turns but the latch does not return into the housing and we are therefore unable to open the door. I have removed the door handle thinking it maybe the spring of the handle but this does not appear to be the case. I have turned the internal bar which goes between the two handles but the latch still did not return into the housing.
It appears I would have to take off part of the door frame to get access.

How can I fix this ?

If you can get at the gap between the door and frame where the lock is, use a knife to prise back the latch tongue. You may have to remove the door stop to do this.
