What type of fitting for a swingdown left hatch?

In the house my son and his wife have just bought the lofy hatch swings down violently. It fits well, the catch opertes ok, but when you release this the hatch (made from heavy MDF) drops violently. Can I replace the hindges or fit some sort of damper system.
