the first owners have put a toung and groove wooden ceiling straight on the floor joists, is this acceptable? secondly they have large recessed lights in the ceiling which i want to remove, but i will be left with a large hole. Since i want to re arrange the room layout and put a studding wall in this room i need to move the position for new lights. Any easy way of fillling this hole? please help, :(

Current BRs require 12mm platerboard and skim so no T&G does not comply. Cut away a square section of the T&G where the light was fitted and fit T&G to fill the square hole.
Do not fit dichroic lights in this wood ceiling they get very hot and will create a fire risk.

would it be acceptable to screw plasterboard striaght on the t and g ceiling?

Overboarding with plasterboard is the cleanest and easiest solution, you will get cracks around the edges of the room but some coving will cover this problem area.
