replacing letterplate

I'm wanting to fit a larger letter plate to my front door but I am having difficulty removing the old one.

The back of the threaded studs on the existing plate have been fixed with a square nut sunk in to the woodwork of the door painted over several times and now seems to have rusted in place and won't unscrew.

Any suggestions for removing it?

Tap a centre mark on the end of the threaded studs with a centre punch or a large nail. Using a small drill bit, drill down the centre of the studs to the nuts. Using a drill bit slightly larger than the threaded studs drill down the small hole you have previously drilled until you have drilled through the nuts. Place a small screw driver or a large nail into the holes and gently tap with a hammer, this should remove the letterplate. To remove the nuts, place a small screw driver in the holes on the outside of the door and gently tap out the nuts.
