I have to install a secondary ceiling independent of the existing lathe and plaster ceiling to meet 60 minute fire regulations. The secondary ceiling will only support the weight of a double layer of 12.5 mm Soundbloc plasterboard and need to be completely independent of the existing ceiling . The maximum span is 3.8 metres at widest point and tapers to 2.8 mteresover a 9 metre length. Can anyone help with the joist size that would be required

Hi Cobre, I would think the easiest and quickest way for you would be to fit a suspended metal frame ceiling. This will cover your fire regs with double boards. Best of all job done and skimmed in a couple of days!

Hi Cubleboy Thanks for your response my main problem is the fact that the ew ceiling needs to be totally independent of the existing ceiling and as far as I know the metal system will require to be suspended off of the existing joists for a 3.8 M span

cobre - is there a specific reason why it has to be independent of the existing ceiling?

Hi
I have spoken to sound engineers and if the ceiling is attached to the existing ceiling it could transmit sound and may not pass the sound test.
I am also dropping this ceiling by 1 metre so have plenty of room for timber joists and I acn use my existing workers rather that a suspended ceiling company

find the building regs part a (structural) 1992 - not the current version, use to be on the planning portal

in the back are span tables
