Fixing a Banister that has Come Away from Wall Support

I'm a complete novice and need advice on how to fix our broken banister. It was like this when we moved in. It's come away from the support on the wall. How do I go about fixing this?

Skew screw it back from the underside of the handrail back to the half newel post. Can counterbore the hole then fill it in with 2 pack wood filler
