Kitchen and How to Fit a Line of Integrated Appliances

Hi
Hoping someone can give me some pointer on what I'm sure noob question.
I'm looking to install an run in a utility room/kitchen for three integrated appliances where they will be next to each other. At one end will be a wall and at the other end there is open space.
I'm presuming that I need to have panels at each end but I'm unclear about in between the appliances. Do I just fit two panels to support the worktop between the appliances? Won't the edge of this panel show? Do I need to buy expensive end panels to ensure that the edge matches the doors or is there another option?
On a related note, do I need to do anything special if I decide - for the moment - to not fit a couple of appliances and use the space for storage e.g. some special hinges?
Thanks in advance.
Mark
