Purpose of Plywood Backing Board on Flat Pack Furniture

What is the purpose of plywood backing board on flat pack furniture? My wooden chest of drawers has developed mould on the backing board. I've cleaned it off, but I know mould can be pretty persistent so I'm thinking of just removing the backing board. But I'm not sure if it has a purpose other than just hiding the back of the drawers!
