Timber Choice for Outdoor Ballustrade?

by scottlongstaff » Tue May 29, 2018 8:30 pm

Hi,

I'm looking to build a toddler proof fence / ballustrade around our terrace. I've found the wire kit I want but need some advice on what timber to use for the uprights and handrail. I'd like it to 'silver' with age so teak was my first thought but Iroko seems cheaper? any suggestions or supplier recommendations would be appreciated. I'll need about 70m all in so cost is a consideration. Thanks!

If you want a good solid wood at an affordable price look at Larch or Douglas fir. I work regularly with the woods you've mentioned and these in outdoor applications and Douglas is super strong and goes a lovely silver colour within around 6 months.

We have local saw mills that cut it to order here in Wales.

Make sure you ask for 100% heart wood if you order it up.

The wall cladding and the deck here is Larch, yet to turn silver.
