The rail on my bed that runs along the side of the bed between the two upright posts has broken. It turned out to be made of MDF surrounded by oak veneer but I quite like the bed and wondered whether I could replace the broken piece. The upright has two large bolts coming out which fit through two holes in the rail and the nut is tightened through a larger hole in the rail where the nut comes out.

My thoughts were:

• 1) Cut a new length of wood to match the old rail.
• 2) Cut holes for the bolts.
• 3) Cut larger holes for the nut and hope it all matches up.
• 4) Join another smaller length to hold the sprung base and then both glue it and dowel joint it to the first length of wood.
• 5) If all this works then I'd have a go at adding an oak veneer afterwards.

Is this the right approach?
Too much work for a below average wood worker?
What's the name of this joint used?
