Repairing a hole in a wooden front door left by cat flap

Looking for some advise on repairing a hole in a wooden front door, in regards to removing a cat flap installed by the previous owner.
Don't have measurements for the size of hole yet, getting ready to repaint the door and thought it was a good opportunity to get rid of the cat flap, also as my dog keeps trying to get through it, she's twice its size!
Any step by step guide would be appreciated for plugging the hole and ensuring the repair won't be obvious to spot when repainted.
