I have a wooden conservatory and the outside sill due to its length is made of two seperate lengths of wood. When the conservatory was built you could not see the join but over time where the wood has moved the paint has cracked. We have just had it re-painted and it looked great. however it is now starting to crack again. Is there anything I can do to prevent it cracking in the future

Hi. Wood is a lovely material, but as you have found it does move with changes in humidity. Where the movement is small some of the exterior paints have enough flexibility to cope. Where the movement is significant the only real way is to use an appropriately coloured frame sealant – the stuff they put around window frames.

The problem could have been minimised during construction, but I doubt you'd want to rip the sill out now to do so!
